Freshman Jerni Kiaku and junior Kimeira Burks both had their best performances of the season and they accounted for over half of North Carolina Central University’s scoring in a 71-55 non-conference women’s basketball home loss to Campbell University on Saturday afternoon.
The Camels pulled away from the Eagles with a decisive 28-11 third quarter. Junior Christabel Ezumah scored all eight of her points in that frame. Campbell (2-0) had a 16-0 advantage on points off turnovers in the third quarter, which ended up being the margin of victory to remain undefeated on the season.
Kiaku scored a season-high 16 points, making six of her nine field goal attempts (66.7%). She also had four rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Burks made three of NCCU’s five made 3-pointers on way to 14 points, which is her first double-digit point performance since joining the maroon and gray this season. She also had three rebounds and three steals.
Campbell led for most of the first half, including a 21-12 advantage after the first quarter before NCCU started the second quarter on a 13-0 run to catapult ahead by four points (25-21). Burks scored the last nine points of that rally, completing an and-1 play before she drilled two consecutive 3-pointers.
The Camels then held the Eagles scoreless for the final six minutes to respond with their own 12-0 run to take a 33-25 advantage at halftime. Campbell would not relinquish its lead in the second half.
Burks and senior Kira Lowery each had nine points for the maroon and gray at the halfway point. Lowery would finish with a season-high 11 points.
Graduate student Shy Tuelle and freshman Gianna Boone both scored 13 points for the Camels. Tuelle hit a game-high four 3-pointers and flirted with a double-double by dishing out eight assists.
Campbell ended the contest with a 42-25 rebounding advantage and senior Svenia Nurenberg paced the way with a game-high eight rebounds.
Junior Blessing Okoh chipped in six points while sophomore Aniya Finger tallied four points, four rebounds and two blocks in her NCCU debut.
NC Central (1-2) will next play at Rutgers University (Piscataway, N.J.) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
